Automation – where to start?

How do experienced automation managers start new implementations?

From setting goals. In this way, they define a coherent approach to implementing automation and clearly define expectations for the new technology. At the same time, they eliminate many barriers that could hinder the development of automation.

We invite you to read our practical guide, from which you will learn:

  • why goals are key to automation success,
  • how to set consistent goals in three simple steps,
  • what goals can automation support, and
  • how to avoid mistakes in the process.

We’ll also share some tools to help you set consistent goals for your automation initiatives.

Goals are the foundation of success

From setting goals. In this way, they define a coherent approach to implementing automation and clearly define expectations for the new technology. At the same time, they eliminate many barriers, Let’s start with a theory supported by research and several reasons why experts recommend starting automation activities by setting goals:

Automation goals that are driven by the organization’s strategic vision ensure the understanding and commitment of management and employees, doubly increasing the likelihood of success. (Bornet, Barkin & Wirtz, 2020)
IT architecture standards such as TOGAF® base their concept on the vision and setting of business goals, the implementation of which is to be supported by technology. This allows for the visualization of expected results, benefits and changes, and also forms the basis of a development roadmap. (TOGAF, 2018)
Clearly defined goals facilitate consistent communication of automation plans, which is something that 47% of surveyed organizations report difficulties with. (Martinek-Jaguszewska, 2024)

How to set automation goals in three simple steps?

Our approach partly refers to the concept of Objectives and Key Results, OKR (Doerr J., 2019), in which we start by setting a motivating main goal. Then we define the expected results that will prove the achievement of this goal. However, it is worth starting this whole process perversely:

(1) Check if it’s worth starting!(2) Set your main goals(3) Define detailed expectations
